The 80/20 rule
80% about the subject: what draws you to it, what you have read, what you have done outside the classroom. 20% about you as a person: leadership, teamwork, other interests that build character.
Show, do not tell
'I am passionate about biology' means nothing. 'Reading Rebecca Skloot's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks made me question the ethics of biobanking, which led me to volunteer at…' shows the passion in action.
Structure
Opening hook (one specific reason you chose the subject). Academic engagement (books, courses, projects). Wider engagement (work experience, research, competitions). Skills and personal qualities with evidence. Conclusion tying it back to your future goals.
What UK tutors hate
Opening lines that quote a famous person. 'Ever since I was a child.' Overuse of 'passionate'. Boasting without evidence. Fake enthusiasm — they read hundreds a day and can tell.
