Admissions committees read hundreds of Statements of Purpose a season. Most are forgettable — same clichés, same childhood story. The ones that get in have a specific hook, a clear research motivation, and program-specific fit.
The structure
Hook (a specific moment or problem, not 'ever since I was a child'). Academic background and how it prepared you. Research or professional experience with concrete outcomes. Why this program specifically (name faculty, labs, courses). Career goals and how the program bridges to them.
The hook
A specific project, moment, or question that made this field yours. 'When my grandmother's diagnosis was delayed six months by a misread MRI, I started asking why radiology has such variable accuracy.' Specific beats poetic every time.
Program fit — non-negotiable
Name 2–3 professors whose research overlaps with yours and cite a paper of theirs. Name specific courses. Explain what the program has that others do not. Generic SOPs get rejected first.
What to leave out
Childhood memories not tied to a specific insight. GPA and test scores (already on the transcript). Empty adjectives ('passionate', 'dedicated'). Anything you cannot back with an example.
